The World According to Grover
Technically this is the inaugural post of the ultimate Nostalgia blog. There are tons of sites dedicated to preserving great kids TV shows of the past (retrojunk.com) and lots of blogs for rare vinyl and oddities of music (weirdomusic or A taste of vinyl).
But the fact is, there isn't a site that blends those two niches and all they curtail. Unfortunately for me, I feel compelled to step in because really I still find myself still singing that Sobey's Christmas Commercial song and some other really weird musical numbers from Reading Rainbow.
It all really started when I couldn't find the 1991 Nelvana Rupert Cartoon theme. So, as this is the first post - it's only fair to post the song that took me so long to find.
Rupert Theme - Circa 1991 - Recorded via an old Library VHS so there is some buzzing.
The melody is reminiscent of Schumann's the Happy Farmer but for me this is simply lunch times with Lipton Chicken Noodle.
These are the People - 1988 - (Sung by Bob McGrath featuring: Martina Navratilova, Barbara Walters and RALPH NADER) A special edition of that old chestnut featuring a really weird cast and some of the worst/best jokes about Bob and Linda.
Put Down the Ducky - 1988 - featuring John Candy (as Yosh Schmenge from SCTV), Andrea Martin (as Edith Prickley from SCTV), New York Mets Keith Hernandez & Mookie Wilson, Jane Curtin, Madeline Kahn, Joe Williams, Paul Reubens (as Pee Wee Herman), Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Wynton Marsalis, Celia Cruz, Ihtzak Perlman, Gordon Jackson & Jean Marsh (as Angus Hudson and Rose Buck of Upstairs Downstairs), Paul Simon, Jeremy Irons!!!, Pete Seeger, Rhea Perlman and Danny Devito, and NY Giants Sean Landeta, Mark Ingram, Karl Nelson and Carl Banks.
The names say it all.
Video of it here.
Put Down the Ducky (Reprise) - 1988 - This features a bit more Paul Simon PLUS Nader, Walters and Navratilova.
Jellyman Kelly - ??? (late 70's?) - I don't have a date on this one. It's James Taylor and infamous Tubist Howard Johnson with the cutest kids ever in life. ever.
I uploaded the Video to YouTube too.
TEAMWORK - 1984 - Written by Steve Horelick and performed by ???. This was from pretty much one of the best Reading Rainbows ever. Levar and a team of actors and gymnasts choreographed a huge dance to THIS song. To me this song embodies everything that was good about 80's music... it was stuck in my head for years but I could never remember where it was from until I found it on an old cassette tape.
And for the finish - two Grover quotes.
Spiffy Idea and Life
for the future --- I've been collecting old Christmas Music from TV Specials and Shows...like the Under the Umbrella Tree Christmas / Channukah songs and the songs from the Old Rankin & Bass Stop Motion Rudolph. Mmm...Christmas is coming.
Also, tons of Charlie Brown music.
